Ngbaka mask
African art from Ubangi
Very visual African mask: triangular in shape, it is divided into two sides. The Ngbaka are known to have produced a limited corpus of masks playing a role in hunting initiations and societies.
There are various styles depending on the regions and affinities of the sculptors, but certain elements persist despite the variations, such as the crenellation present on the bridge of the nose.
This Ngbaka mask carries with it an important cultural charge of the initiation rites of passage to adulthood, of the spirits of the bush and of communication with the ancestors.
