Koulango mask
African mask from West Africa
Anthropomorphic face mask with the ethnic name Siginkura-Ayna
This African Koulango mask shows a buffalo, a sacrificial animal among the Mande. It belongs to the Dô society and its ritual use is linked to the chiefs' clans, who organise sacrifices at the end of Ramadan. The Koulango, Ligbi, have preserved animist traditions through the Dô society, which is perhaps a survival of the Poro cult practised by the Sénoufo.
