Mukinka Salampasu mask

The powerful Salampasu masks

This African Salampasu mask of the Mukinka type corresponds to the perfect typological representation to illustrate the fierce warriors that were the Salampasu. In addition to the traditional materials used, the iconography is also respected, a large forehead; on top are attached many wicker balls rolled up to represent hair.

The face has a deep, horizontal forehead overhanging the dark gaze. The nose is almost triangular in shape and the mouth is square in shape, open and revealing a row of sharp teeth. The chin is pointed and on the sides of the mask are holes for attaching a raffia beard.

An authentic work, dating from the middle of the 20th century, around the years 1940 - 1950. The mask has a collection label inside. It is supplied with its personalized support.

Exclusively reserved for men, Salampasu masks are worn during the initiation rites of various secret societies.

The Salampasu have a reputation for being fierce warriors, and within their society, the role of warrior and hunter are considered privileged occupations. These masks known as Mukinka are used in initiation ceremonies.

There are three types of masks among the Salampasu, those made of fiber represent hunters, those made of wood represent warriors, and those with metal sheets on the surface represent leaders.

These masks belong to accomplished warriors and are worn not only during initiation ceremonies, but also during funerals.
