Bembe Eluba ya Bùtende mask
The emangungu or eluba ya butdende african mask was used in the initiation rites of young men among the Bembe in D. R. Congo.
It was worn by an initiate, his identity concealed, when he left the initiation camp to ask for offerings of food in nearby villages during his year-long period of seclusion.
On the mask, the enhancement of the eyes with recessed circles of white clay, suggests an ability to see into the spiritual realm.
