Mbagani mask
African masks from the Congo
The Mbagani carvers are renowned for their traditional masks with a pointed chin, a protruding rectangular mouth, large coffee bean eyes placed under a domed forehead.
Since the Mbagani do not know of important initiation ceremonies, this mask is linked to healing rites.
The back of the mask shows a very beautiful usual patina, where there has been contact with the skin of the dancers, the eroded edges are dotted with holes which allow the traditional costume to be attached to it, which completely covers the dancer.
