Songye simian mask

Monkey masks in African art Songye

In the tradition of Basongye masks, the presence of monkeys questions the human being by their originality, their resemblance to them, their ability to laugh and move at will. Here is a beautiful example of a baboon mask.

Their presence in groups is uncommon and relatively formidable.

There are no French terms that translate so well what the English-speaking world expresses by “performance”, “art in motion”.

The reality of the primitive bifwebe masks is nothing without the movement, the dance, the end of the day or the neomenie, the music and the songs, the dance steps, the magico-religious ritual linked to the festive climate surrounding the release of these formidable beings who recapitulate in themselves the whole of the cosmos.

The celebrations vary from one village to another, adapting to the realities of the present and bringing an incomparable metaphysical density.
