Lega Muminia mask
€300.00
Old African Lega mask of the muminia type. It is a light wooden mask covered with a thick layer of white pigment. Traditional Lega art objects are mainly linked to the Bwami association in charge of the initiation of individuals, men and women.
Within the bwami, an association also known in other ethnic groups in eastern DR Congo, a number of objects were used, including masks of different sizes, therefore bearing different names.
The small masks carved from wood, bone or ivory are called lukwakongo, lukungu and kayamba while the larger examples are the muminia and the idimu. They were generally not worn on the face.
