Dan mask
Superb example of a traditional mask called "fire", also called "firefighter masks". It comes from Côte d'Ivoire, more precisely from the Dan country.
These tribal art masks are distinguished by their red fabric covering, a color symbolically associated with fire and vigilance.
Their main function is to monitor domestic fires, especially during the harmattan season, a dry wind that increases the risk of fire.
When a domestic fire gets out of control, the wearer of the mask intervenes to reprimand those responsible, usually housewives, and remind them of the rules of caution. In the event of intervention, the head of the house concerned is required to pay a fine to the head of the sacred house of the village.
In addition, these masks can direct operations during fires or bush fires, thus playing a crucial role in the prevention and management of fires within the community.
