Dan mask

African Dan masks play a central role in the rites and culture of Côte d'Ivoire. Carved in wood and generally patinated, they embody ancestral spirits and symbolize the duality between protective forces and regulatory energies.

During traditional ceremonies, these masks, known as gle, are worn during ritual dances, key moments in the transmission of knowledge and moral values.

The wearer, by adopting the gestures and expression of the spirit represented, establishes a privileged link between the world of the living and that of the ancestors, thus ensuring a spiritual mediation essential to strengthening social cohesion.

Accompanied by traditional music and songs, these ritual performances confirm the importance of social order and collective identity within the Dan community.
