Songye Kifwebe mask

€335.00

African Kifwebe masks, also called Bifwebe, are emblematic ritual artifacts of the Songye and Luba peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are sometimes masculine, sometimes feminine, determining certain elements of their architecture such as the more or less developed crest.

These tribal masks are distinguished by their characteristic striated patterns, incised or painted, and are used during the ceremonies of the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe secret societies, where dances of the same name are performed.

African Kifwebe art masks play a central role among the Basongye in particular but also among the Luba and Kalebwe, exercising control over the social order and participating in crucial activities such as initiations.

They are worn with costumes comprising a hood, a shirt and trousers made of woven bark, complemented by various accessories made of animal skins, furs and feathers.

Once removed from their original context, these masks are often admired for their striking graphic qualities, including their contrasting black and white (even reddish) striations, their stylized features, and their overall sense of balance.
