Luba Kifwebe mask

€840.00

African Kifwebe masks are distinguished by their incised or painted parallel striations, and often feature soft curves among the Luba.

Traditionally, these tribal art masks were worn during ceremonies of the Bwadi bwa Kifwebe initiation society, where dances of the same name were performed.

The masks were then decorated with beards made of long plant fibers, attached to perforations on the edges of the mask.

The Kifwebe masks of the Luba are strongly influenced by those of their neighbors, the Songye. The Luba and Songye associations used these masks in ritual and ceremonial contexts.
