Ndaaka mask

€250.00

This Ndaaka tribal mask from the Ituri region of northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is distinguished by an exceptionally restrained yet powerful sculptural vocabulary. Carved from a relatively flat wooden panel, the face is structured around a strong central axis formed by a broad forehead and an elongated vertical nose.

The attribution to the Ndaaka, or Ndaka, belongs within a broader regional artistic context. Research on Ituri masking traditions shows considerable stylistic interaction between the Ndaaka and neighbouring Bodo, Mbo, Beke and related communities. Museum and published examples are consequently sometimes described more broadly as Ndaaka or neighbouring Ituri cultures.

Ndaaka masks are particularly associated with the nkumbi or kumbi male initiation cycle, during which masked officiants participated in ceremonies surrounding circumcision, instruction and the transition of young men toward adult social status. Some masks represented ancestral or spirit beings and could also function in maintaining ritual discipline within the initiation camp.

This example is especially compelling for its near-abstract economy of form. The severe diagonal eyes, central ridge and squared mouth produce a concentrated, unmistakably sculptural presence characteristic of the diverse masking traditions of the Ituri forest.
