Chokwe young woman Mwana Pwo mask

The Mwana Pwo masks are among the masterpieces of Tshokwe art. This deep sculptural finesse is idealised by the beauty of the female face. The beauty of this mask is accentuated by geometric designs of controlled finesse and classical Tshokwe scarification. The semi-closed curved eyes, the finely chiselled dentition, the finely chiselled teeth, the finery acting as a headdress and the presence of small holes around the perimeter clearly indicate that the design of this mask was undoubtedly for ritual use.
