Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask
Female beauty in African art
This truly exceptional African mask is a traditional female mask of the mwana pwo type meaning "beautiful woman". This is the most famous type of mask among the Chokwe, in Angola.
This one is quite remarkable for the finesse of its features. The sculptural quality of this collector's item repatriated by a Belgian family testifies to the mastery of the sculptor who created it to order for a dancer.
Note the quite splendid color of the patina and the presence and intact preservation of this superb mask. Its headdress made of rope testifies to the sculptural quality of the piece if it were still necessary to convince oneself of it.
The mask itself is approximately 18cm tall. The total height including the base is approximately 41 cm.
