Senufo Kpeliye mask
Art and Poro in Ivory Coast
African mask type kpeliye. It was sculpted by a Senoufo artist in Ivory Coast. This one is exceptionally twin, it consists of two faces affixed. Nevertheless, we recognize all the traditional features of Senufo art with the prognathic mouth, the summit bird etc. Smooth dark brown patina.
This mask came out on the occasion of the Poro festivities among the Senoufo. As seen in the pop-up photos, it was worn by a dancer wearing a thick costume. The appendages around the perimeter of the mask, as well as the top figure could vary from one copy to another. Instead of the hornbill bird that we see here, we find for example an antelope head or a chameleon.
