Chokwe Mwana Pwo mask
African art from Angola includes a well-known type of mask: the mwana pwo masks used in the Chokwe cultural complex to instill good behavior in young girls on the way to becoming women.
Worn by men, traditional masks such as this one were finely sculpted: almost closed almond-shaped eyes, a mouth sometimes with cut teeth, numerous scarifications in particular on the cheeks and a cross on the forehead.
This copy still has a rope headdress used to hold it on the head of the dancer (still male) as well as a beautiful patina reddened with the help of a tukula.
