Luba Kihona chief stool
Master of Buli in the Luba Kingdom
Superb African wooden Luba stool in the style of the Master of Buli's workshop, which in fact seems to have been made up of several sculptors. A very beautiful woman with a sculpted stomach and back supports the circular seat with slender hands. The strongly extruded headdress towards the back, is hollowed out, and sculpted in addition to being composed of a brace.
The piece is in very good condition and belonged to François C. Bazelaire, a Belgian painter, also an expert in African art.
In traditional African art, the so-called corpus of the Buli master is among the most renowned. Statues are also attributed to him.
Much more than a simple everyday object, this type of seat called kihona or kipona, was an emblem of choice for a chief to establish his authority.
