Agni Baoule maternity figure

Filiation in African art

Remarkable African statue depicting a mother carrying her child on her back. This is a recurring typology in African art from Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. We find there the tradition of the finely sculpted headdress composed of multiple buns. Scarifications are present on the face and body. This piece is to be classified in the category of waka sona.

The Baoulé corpus offers us to contemplate pieces with an aesthetic of extraordinary finesse that the first Western ferret settlers surprised to discover.
