Baule maternity figure

African Maternity from West Africa

Maternity statues are ubiquitous in African art. Here, it is a finely sculpted statue clearly from the Baule in the Ivory Coast. The posture is classical, sitting with the child in her hands. The mother rests on an Akan style stool. Scarifications are present. High detailed headdress. The child seems to want to grab the chest to drink from it. Old brown patina. Maternities of this type were sculpted in honour of the fertile woman and kept in the hut by her husband.
