Luba headrest

Luba caryatids in African art

Monoxyl wood neckrest from the Luba in Congo. In African art, neckrests or headrests serve as a support for the artistic expression of sculptors. Among the Luba, this dimension takes on an even deeper character since works of art are also considered as prestigious objects, sculpted to order in order to display them to the visitor and thereby bear witness to their social statue.

This consists of a curved seat supported by two upright caryatids, arms intertwined. The brown patina is glossy.
