Luba Shankadi headrest
Traditional art workshops in the Luba Kingdom
This African neckrest of Luba origin is one of the objects very well known for their refinement in the African art of the Baluba kingdom. There are headrests of different styles depending on the regions and workshops from which they come. This is linked to the Shankadi style and more precisely to the style of the "master of cascading headdresses" from the Kinkondja workshop, given the treatment of the eponymous headdress of one of the two characters.
In addition to being everyday objects preserving male and female headdresses, Luba neckrests were also emblems of authority for their owner.
A very similar headrest appears on the cover of the book "L'art africaine", J. Kerchache, see image.
