Figurative comb - Luba - Congo - SOLD

Hair care in traditional African art

African Luba combs in solid wood decorated with pyrographed or intaglio designs, serve both as adornments and detanglers that men or women in their hair previously softened with a greasy body. It is also this fat that protects the combs and ensures their longevity.

The decoration of these objects makes use of a repertoire or cohabit abstract patterns, animal or human figures. The hairpins and the comb are transformed into real ornaments, whose material and finesse highlight the prestige or rank of the wearer. "Dapper", page 28. The largest traditional Baluba combs are for more "decorative" use, and are offered to newlyweds. Their realization often translates a symbol, transforming it into a vow of life.
