In African cultures, many initiatory societies govern social, political, and so on. Leaders and initiates organize themselves into sometimes secret societies reserved for men, women or mixed. The idea of adolescence does not exist, children follow an initiation with milestones that they cross until reaching, at the appropriate age, to adulthood. To prepare for the responsibilities and activities that follow, mentors will use various masks, statues and everyday objects.
These are obviously initiatory objects related to the sexual act. Fecundity and virility are central themes among Bembé as among other ethnic groups, because the descent represented first of all a labor force but also a social affirmation of the wealth of a man.
