This round, or almost round, mask type of the Baule people, called ‘moon mask’, symbolises natural phenomena such as the moon and the setting sun. These masks make their appearance at the beginning of the grand mask dances of the Baule people. The present, unusual 'moon mask' is made of light, With a finely manufactured plaited coiffure, round eyes, a small mouth and typical tribal scarification marks.
