Mangbetu Bukuru iga hë anthropomorphic box
Corpus Mangbetu in the traditional art of Africa
In African art, the Mangbetu are first known to be known as great architects to whom the dignitaries of neighboring ethnic groups called for the construction of important buildings. They are also known for their characteristic statuary, most often depicting characters with strangely elongated headdresses, as is the case with the character presented here.
This small Mangbetu bukuru iga hë box is typical of this ethnic group and is found quite rarely. The tree headdress is the one worn by men and women, obtained from an early age by deforming the skull with the help of cord, see attached contextual photos.
