Kuba Ndengese wine cup
In the Kuba tradition and art, all objects of daily life are embellished with various decorative motifs.
The only goal sought is the pleasure and pride of owning beautiful objects. It is therefore pure aesthetic pleasure.
The "mbwoong ntey" palm wine cups were very finely carved prestige objects.
This cup is one of the finest examples of the anthropomorphic type.
It has the typical triangular shape of the Kuba, widening into an ovoid volume at the level of the skull.
The hairline has a shape curving over the temples to form an angle with the ears, behind which it disappears.
Piece collected in Kasai in the years 1940-1950 and repatriated to Belgium, preserved until today. As tradition dictates, after being carved, the raw wood was given a patina by the sculptor who made this piece either to order or with a view to selling it among other traditional Kuba objects: drums, boxes, etc.
