Mossi stool

Seats in African art

Wooden stool with three legs, which is typical of the ethnic groups of Burkina Faso (the Lobi also producing tripod seats) and an outgrowth in the shape of a head. The latter wears a crest-shaped headdress. The dark and smooth patina has been achieved by its property by repeatedly applying layers of palm oil over time.

In African art, stools and seats are everyday objects but also very personal objects linked to the prestige of individuals. As of, they were not loaned and were often displayed with pride by their owner.
