Luba Lukasa memory board

Divination in African art Luba

The memorial tablets or sacred writings bear the name of lukasa among the Luba. It is a wooden plate sometimes with a head as is the case here. In the center of the tablet are items such as pearls, rings and cowries precisely distributed for divination. This arrangement features a mnemonic code intended to preserve the most important symbols of royalty and the sacred.
These esoteric signs also refer to the epic kasala chants preserving the memory of the original myths and the history of the dynasties.
