Songye divination oracle
Known in African art from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Songye have developed complex divinatory practices to guide community and individual decisions.
Among these practices, divination or friction oracles play a central role in allowing communication with the spirit world in order to obtain advice or revelations.
Divinators, called nganga, use various instruments and rituals to interpret messages from spirits, helping to resolve social, medical or personal problems.
These divinatory practices are deeply rooted in the Basongye tribal culture and reflect a worldview where the sacred and the profane are intimately linked.
The nganga play a vital role as spiritual mediators, able to traverse the temporal and celestial realms.
They are consulted to diagnose and treat various afflictions, whether individual or collective: treatment of infertility and epidemics are, for example, part of their attributions.
