Pende Mbuya face mask carved from wood and enhanced with pigments, fibers and an attached coiffure. The face displays characteristic features of this artistic tradition, including elongated half-closed eyes, a pronounced nose, an open mouth with carved teeth, facial incisions and contrasting pigments.

Among the Pende, Mbuya masks are notably associated with the mukanda male initiation cycle, during which they are performed with elaborate fiber costumes. They embody a variety of characters, personalities and social types and appear in performances combining instruction, entertainment and commentary on individual and collective behaviour. Such masquerades can also address relationships between generations, men and women, and the living and ancestral worlds.

This example is particularly appealing for its preserved fiber coiffure and clearly visible polychromy. The combination of facial modelling, scarification patterns and attached materials gives the mask a strong and expressive presence.
