Songye amulet

Very small Songye anthropomorphic figure carved from bone, measuring only 6 cm high. The figure has an elongated head and neck, with the hands positioned on either side of a strongly projecting abdomen.

Among the Songye, protective objects were not limited to large nkishi power figures. Small personal figures were also used and could be associated with active substances known as bishimba. Such protective devices could be carried by hunters, blacksmiths, chiefs and ritual specialists.

Its exceptionally small scale therefore supports an interpretation as a personal amulet or miniature protective figure, intended to accompany its owner rather than function as an independent display sculpture. The present absence of ritual substances or attachments does not necessarily exclude such a function, since perishable components frequently disappeared from older power objects.

The bone displays an attractive honey-brown to dark brown patina, particularly pronounced in the recessed areas, suggesting prolonged handling.
