Mossi Biga doll - SOLD OUT
A wooden statue of a stylized female, carved in a series of geometric sections. The head has a large crest like hairstyle and with a flat, wedge shaped face with engraved details. The long neck leads to a conical shaped body with prominent breasts, curving stomach and engraved details to the surface. Mounted on a custom made stand.
These typical, abstract fertility dolls, called ‘biga’, are worn by the women of the Mossi in their garments when they wish for children. When a child is born, the ‘biga’ dolls are either placed on house altars, or passed on to the next generation, or even given to the girls as a toy.
