Fetishes in traditional African art
These small protective fetishes were made to order by the witch doctor in order to protect his sponsor or his home.
They are always created according to the same structure, namely an iron body encompassed by a padded leather skin or rolled up in a cord reminiscent of a spider's web.
The look of the tarantula wards off bad luck; we often find references to arachnids in African rites and beliefs, as among the Bété whose masks have appendages reminiscent of the legs.
