Senufo dignitary figure
Rare monoxyl figure representing a dignitary. Statuary and Senufo art in general focus on agrarian rites. However, we know a few rare statues representing specific people, in other words effigies. These pieces are always high-ranking figures who can afford the services of a sculptor.
In this figure, we observe a somewhat exaggerated trunk, probably a wish of the sponsor wanting to show himself in his best light, in good health.
This piece comes from a Flemish collection made up of numerous pieces from West Africa acquired in Brussels galleries.
