Lega Sakimatwematwe figure
Impressive surrealist statue with multiple small faces pointing in all directions seemingly fixed on a trunk resting on small legs. These faces are very similar to the traditional primitive Lukwakongo masks among the Lega. The whole is covered with kaolin and surmounted by a small feather headdress.
These African figures are linked to the Bwami initiation in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This was used by a kindi initiate to teach young people virtues such as wisdom and circumspection. The statues linked to the Bwami bear the generic name of igingi, this one is of the Sakimatwematwe type.
