Lega Lukungu mask
In Lega African art, the majority of objects including figurines, statuettes, masks and masks are used within the framework of Bwami, the initiatory society which inculcates in young people the precepts necessary for life in society, moral and religious codes. .
These objects are the property of initiates of different ranks, some are therefore more prestigious than others. Lukungu-type masks like the one featured here belong to the ultimate grade initiate, the lutumbo lwa kindi.
These little primitive masks are rare. This is circular in shape and has small circular decorations that are very present on lega art objects.
This piece comes from an important Belgian family collection : many pieces of early Lega art have been reported, including a set of small initiation masks Lukungu and Lukwakongo types.
