Lega Lukungu mask

Small African mask used as part of the Bwami initiation among the Lega. Bone and ivory pieces such as this small traditional mask were the property of masters who initiated the young recruits. The masks and figurines were used to inculcate in young people the virtues to be demonstrated in society.

This small mask is beautifully sculpted and embellished with characteristic circular perforations. The patina in gradation going from yellow to brown testifies to the applications of palm oil carried out during the rituals.
