Zande Nazeze figure
Initiation and art in the Zande tradition
African wooden statuette of Zande origin (Azande ethnic group in the Uele region in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo). This traditional figurine bears the name of nazeze and was the property of the bandayaka, the head of the local initiatory association of Mani.
Among the Zande and related groups, we find small statues sometimes equipped with metal earrings (as is the case here) and more rarely with a magic charge. These objects were used as part of the initiation rites of the Mani.
The traditional Zande artistic corpus is recognizable by its statuettes with simple forms, with powerful legs and a broad head.
