Lega Idimu mask

Lega works in European collections

This mask is used during the ritual ceremonies of the Bwami cult.

It is the individual property of a young Kindi postulant. During the Kindi kilinkumbi ritual, the aspirants attach ivory masks to a pala rack. Around them, a large wooden mask symbolises the unity of the groups participating in this rite. Meanwhile, behind the pala rack stand important Kindi members, all patrilineally related and closely associated with the large wooden mask.

The mask we offer comes from the collection of the late François-Charles Bazelaire, a great art lover and collector of African tribal art. In collaboration with himself, this mask was estimated at a sale of African tribal art in 2020 at 4000 - 5000 €.
