Lega Lukwakongo mask

Bwami masks in the Lega tradition

Small African mask covered with a kaolin patina. He still wears his little raffia beard. Masks such as this, carved by the Lega, were not intended to be worn on the face but to be held in the hand or placed on ritual panels. This specimen belongs to the Lukwakongo type.

In Lega culture, almost all artistic production is linked to the secret society Bwami which taught the precepts necessary for Lega morality and social life.
