Chokwe Luena hair pin
Hairdressing and tradition in Africa
It is sometimes forgotten that hairstyles were both of aesthetic interest and a social marker in traditional African culture. For this purpose, combs and pins were carved by artists of many ethnic groups from North to South to East to West. Here, observe a thin pin bearing a beautifully carved face of Chokwe or Luena origin.
The hairstyles worn by men and women were often also depicted on statues and masks, for example among the Punu, Mangbetu, and many others.
