Multi-headed figure in Lega art
During ritual ceremonies, these statues are among the most powerful objects used in the worship of Bwami. They are rubbed with palm oil which gives them this beautiful patina. It also happens sometimes to “grate” them, sawdust and shavings going into medicinal potions to be ingested. ”When they have several heads, they are called Sakimatwematwe.
