Lega Sakimatwematwe figure

This amazingly shaped African statue comes from eastern Congo. It was used in an initiatory setting among the Lega, a forest people renowned for the profound significance of their artistic corpus and their culture.

Here we see a trunk carried by small legs. Many faces are oriented in all directions. As part of the Bwami initiation society, a master taught young recruits the qualities and virtues they had to demonstrate by telling sorts of fables.

Here, the figure is of the Sakimatwematwe type and encourages young initiates to be circumspect and vigilant.
