Large Songye Nkishi figure

Art and power of the Congo

Large Songye statue carved in dense wood. In view of its impressive size, this Nkishi-type piece was carved for the protection of a village. Its top horn is still stuck in the skull and testifies to loading and magical use. Note also the presence of a small abdominal bag. An important stylistic bias is visible through the strongly drawn, almond-shaped eyes.

This African statue was brought back from southeastern Congo in the 1980s.
