Sculpture of power in African art

This African wooden statue originates from the Songye ethnic group in the D.R. Congo. The expressive, elongated face is encrusted with copper studs which give the nkishi most of its magical power. This Songye statue was intended to protect its owner against all the perils and in particular the risks of the bush.

The Songye ethnic group, also called Kalebwe, is very famous in the field of African art.
