Luba female figure

Effigy of a woman in Luba art

Remarkable African wooden statue from the Luba. Women have historically held a major role in authority and the transmission of power in the Luba kingdom. It is therefore the artistic corpus in which we find the most female representations, whether they are effigies, prestigious stools (kipona), neckrests, water pipes, calabash, etc.

Note here the exceptional sculptural quality of the piece in particular at the level of scarifications present on the abdomen in large numbers. The patina is also remarkable: there is a strong ritual impregnation of oil and a good wear showing the natural color of the wood.

Piece in very good state of conservation brought back in the 1950's.
