Songye Nkishi power figure
Magic and fetishes in African art
African wooden statue of Songye origin, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, having had the function of protecting its owners. Such fetishes were made to order and then adorned with accessories that actually give it its magical power. Called mankishi (sing. nkishi), these statues of power are known in the African art of the Basongye as true works of art divided into many distinct stylistic currents.
We will note on this piece the presence of the summit horn which must have been charged with medicinal elements; an animal skin loincloth, a small belly bag and a necklace of white pearls. The face is very expressive, with a broad chin and a drooping mouth. The hands are placed on either side of the swollen abdomen, hollowed out with a cavity.
