Art and authority in the Luba kingdom

African statuette carved with the effigy of an ancestor among the Luba. The latter have a matrilineal society, the female figure therefore occupies a central place in the kingdom but also in the statuary as well as in the roles played; thus, in the luba kingdom, women can, for example, be mbudye diviners.

On the abdomen, traditional scarifications are present, similar to those seen in the attached context photo.
