Baule maternity

African maternity among the Baule master sculptors

This Baule maternity statue is of appreciable size. The slender figure stands holding her child in her arms in a nursing position. The purity of the forms testifies to the fact that this Baule work is the work of a master sculptor. The carricature of the child clinging to the drooping breasts is striking. This statue also shows fine traditional Baule scarification. The hairstyle of this work is particularly successful.

This piece is also interesting in terms of its provenance, as it was for many years the property of a painter, collector and expert in classical art from outside Europe.
