Hemba Singiti ancestor figure

African statue representing an ancestor. In Hemba African art, which for a long time was believed to be an integral part of the artistic corpus of the Luba kingdom, an important current of statuary was identified late in life.

These very aesthetic effigies of ancestors bear the name of singiti. They are dedicated to the ancestor to honor him and represent his authority.

These are normally male figures. We find there certain recurring elements such as the beard, the coif with a brace, the haughty bearing of the head. The protruding belly also.
